PUPILS proved they were up to the challenge when they took part in a science, technology, engineering and maths day.

All year nine pupils at Spen Valley Sports College were involved in the special challenge day, working in teams to design and build boats that would float.

In the afternoon, they competed to see which team’s boat was best at sailing across a paddling pool towards a target.

Teacher Leanne Gadsby said: “It was a great day. The pupils worked well and learned a lot.

“We’re very grateful to EON, whose generous sponsorship made the activities possible.”

Pupil Aithne Clayton said: “It was a fun challenge, and interesting to find out how boats can be powered. I enjoyed working with new people.”
