A LIVERSEDGE teenager who has a heart defect got to meet his idol thanks to a children’s charity.
Liam Gawthorpe, 16, is a huge fan of television presenter and comedian Paul O’Grady – and the lucky teen got to meet him thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK, which grants wishes for children and young people with life threatening illnesses.
Liam, his mum Sharon, dad Neil and brothers Sean and Ethan went along to the ITV studios to watch the rehearsal for Paul O’Grady Live, before Liam came face to face with the star for a chat.
Neil said: “He’s one of Paul’s avid fans, he was absolutely speechless when he met him; he was smiling from ear to ear!”
Liam was born with a congenital heart defect and was operated on at four months. Last year he was back in hospital due to a brain abscess. His brother Ethan, eight, has a heart murmur and suffers from selective mutism.
Neil said: “As a family we don’t get a lot of time together and we can’t fly because of Liam’s condition so the wish was fantastic as it pulled us all together. It also gave me and Sharon a break; we felt proper pampered!”
During their time at the ITV studios, the family also bumped into DJ Chris Moyles, X Factor voice Peter Dickson and singer Nicholas Jonas of the Jonas Brothers.
Liam and his brothers were also given goody bags which included a T-shirt, a signed photo of Paul O’Grady and a nodding Olga toy.
Neil added: “We couldn’t have wished for anything more.
“The look on Liam’s face would put a lump in your throat.”
