The newly formed ‘More in Common’ group, made up of colleagues of the murdered Batley and Spen MP, local community groups and individuals determined to honour her life, has organised the event to bring people together.

There will be various sporting activities including a football tournament, circus skills, an assault course and archery.

Other attractions include a bouncy castle, face painting, drumming workshops and food and craft stalls.

Mrs Cox’s sister, Kim Leadbeater said: “Jo dearly loved the people of Batley and Spen, and so we’re planning a day of fun for the whole community to enjoy.

“It will be a day of celebration, and I know it will be a day she would have enjoyed.”

Batley Community Choir will perform their version of The Rose to honour Mrs Cox at the event.

They released the song as a charity single in tribute to the much-loved MP and to raise money for the Jo Cox Fund.

The fund was set up by Mrs Cox’s friends and family to support causes close to her heart, including the Hope Not Hate charity which has backed the community day.

Leaflets promoting the event read: “Our local MP Jo Cox was murdered by hatred and intolerance. Taking inspiration from her own words, we are uniting under the ‘More in Common’ banner. This event aims to bring people and communities together and honour her memory.”

The free event takes place at Upper Batley High School from noon until 5pm on Saturday, September 3.
