The chief of Kirklees Council paid a visit to Cleckheaton to look at ways of helping business in the area.

Chief Executive Adrian Lythgo went on a whistlestop tour of Cleckheaton, and was accompanied by councillors Kath and Andrew Pinnock and John Lawson. Speaking during a visit to Garnett Wire’s factory, Mr Lythgo said: “I am here in Cleckheaton to see how we can help local businesses.

“My primary role is to be an ambassador for businesses around the area and I want to find out the extent to which the council can help.”

In addition to visiting Garnett Wire, Mr Lythgo visited Cleckheaton Library and Flexitallic Ltd, and Coun Kath Pinnock felt that Mr Lythgo had learned lots about the town during his visit.

She said: “It was a really positive day – we showed him a lot of what Cleckheaton has to offer.

“Obviously there are a few abandoned buildings, and this needs addressing, but there are some really positive parts of the town.

“We have a highly-skilled workforce – businesses like Flexitallic, which is a worldwide company, just go to show how vibrant Cleckheaton is.”

Speaking to the Spenborough Guardian, Mr Lythgo said: “What always strikes me about Cleckheaton is how it seems to have its own self-sustaining economy.

“Obviously, there are many impressive parts of Kirklees in this respect, but with places such as Garnett’s Wire, there still seems to be a strong manufacturing base in the town, and I think that is something that we should celebrate.

“In terms of the town centre, it’s all about the footfall!

“Our aim is to see that footfall is as high as possible and, as the Totally Locally campaign in the centre of town demonstrates, there is real vibrancy in the town centre.”
