Air cadets' hardwork rewarded

IT was cheers all around for the Spen Valley Air Cadets 2490 Squadron who were on top after winning numerous awards.

The Heckmondwike RAFA club played host to the presentation evening which had been resurrected after a long absence.

The evening included many cadets being rewarded for their efforts over the past few months as they received awards and certificates for first aid, gliding and Bronze Duke of Edinburgh awards and badges.

Six lucky cadets were also awarded with trophies for their 2009 individual performances and achievements. They were Daniel Ward (best uniform), Megan Dutch (best cadet), Daniel Harrison (best newcomer), Faye Harrison (best participator), Ashley Crooks (best attendance) and Corporal Ben Thomas (best sportsperson)

It was also a special night for civilian instructor Richard Collings, of Hunsworth, who received his official certificate of appointment into the Air Training Corps

The evening was made even more special as Squadron Leader Andy Blaikie, who was Commanding Officer of Spen Valley Squadron from 1979-1987, was invited to present the awards.

The squadron's Flight Lieut Kellyann Martin said: "All the staff of the squadron have been delighted with the progress of the cadets within the last year. We'd like to thank the staff of Heckmondwike RAFA club for their assistance and Asda for their generosity in providing refreshments.
