Eyesore buildings in the centre of Cleckheaton could soon be razed to the ground.
Officers at Kirklees Council have confirmed they have received an application to demolish the old Burnhill’s site at Serpentine Road within weeks.
The buildings are owned by Tesco which bought the land for a proposed superstore.
But earlier this year the company said it had abandoned plans for the development, leaving many concerned about what would happen to the empty buildings.
Cleckheaton councillor Kath Pinnock (LibDem) said: “It is great to learn that Tesco has taken steps to demolish the buildings. A demolition contractor has applied to start demolition on September 30.
“We now need to find out what Tesco plans to do with it once the buildings have gone. Will they surface it and use it as a car park? I will certainly be asking these questions.”
Coun Pinnock said that Serpentine Road may have to close for some of the demolition, as parts of the complex look directly onto the street.
