BBC still so popular

THE argument put by Alan Carcas against the BBC in last week's Spenborough Guardian doesn't stack up.

Audience research shows the BBC is more popular than ever among licence fee payers.

On Saturday the BBC showed the rugby league Challenge Cup final and the BBC Proms 2010.

To attend those two events would have cost more than the whole licence fee.

BBC radio is superb and is reflected by the millions of listeners who tune into the stations.

The BBC is not perfect, but represents good value for money.

Alan suggests that the BBC is responsible for the plight of regional newspapers; not true, but that is an argument for another day.

The importance of regional newspapers is reflected by a book I recently borrowed from Cleckheaton Library about the Spen Valley's contribution to World War I. Much of the pages were culled from the Cleckheaton and Spenborough Guardian. Preserving our history means supporting our newspapers too.

One book I won't be buying is Tony Blair's. I have too much respect for the British Legion and the work that they do; if they want to accept his millions that's up to them.

Finally in last week's Spenborough Guardian rumours were denied that Dewsbury and District Hospital will lose one nurse on every ward.

However according to the latest NHS vacancies survey, more than 630 nurses, midwife and health visitor jobs across Yorkshire were vacant at the end of March.

This is not good enough, nor are the government's plans to scrap NHS Direct, the hugely popular medical telephone line.
