An unknown buyer paid more than £200,000 for the Grade II listed Parkside building at the Eddisons auction in Leeds. It is not known what it will be used as.

The site closed more than a year ago, with former co-owner Simon Pawson citing a drop-off in trade and the possibility of rent hikes as the reasons.

Spenborough Chamber of Commerce president Dave Minich wants to see the pub back open as soon as possible.

He said: “I’ve heard absolutely nothing. It would be nice to hear something and find out what’s happening.

“It used to be a major pub in the town and it would be nice to see it as a major pub again.

“It certainly was a good place for events.”

In March Kirklees Council officers denied the Little Gem Pub Company’s proposals to extend it as a pub and build a roof terrace.

The inside of the 19th century building would have been redesigned to have new bars fitted.

But the planners ruled that the company’s designs were not in-keeping with the street’s visual setting.

A decision notice read that the plans “would cause substantial harm to the listed building, its setting and the visual amenities of the wider streetscene.”

This was because of the scale and design of the plans as well as the “cumulative impact” of features planned for the outisde of the pub, they said.

The building is of historical significance because it was once used as a meeting place for Luddites.
