Born in Spen's historic house

THIS property must be one of the oldest in the Spen Valley, dating back to 1660.

The photograph was loaned to us by Mark Wadsworth who was actually born at the house - Snelsins Farm - 84 years ago.

He recalled that one of the neighbours was Sir William Fenton of BBA.

Mark's father was Wilfred Wadsworth and Mark believes this picture of his father outside the house would have been taken around 1911/12 - not long after he bought it.

The family stayed there until 1942.

Mark's second photograph shows him as a toddler of around two, sitting in a haystack in fields. In the background is the old Yorkshire tar distillery.
