Bulb-planting day a success

children and members of the Cleckheaton Rotary Club have joined forces to help brighten up a town-centre park.
Pupils from Howard Park Community School helped plant 1,000 new purple crocus bulbs in Memorial Park, to mark the Thanks for Life Programme, run by Rotary International.
Rotary president Pam Scales said: “The purple crocuses are to mark the work that Rotary International has done to eradicate polio in developing countries.
“The purple represents all the children who get immunised against polio, as they all dip their fingers into a purple dye to show they’ve already had the jab.”
Thanks, in part, to Rotary International, there are now only three more countries in which polio is still at epidemic levels after the disease has almost been eradicated in India.
The crocus-planting now takes the number of purple crocuses in Memorial Park to 3,000, and Pam paid tribute to the children who helped out.
She said: “We would like to thank all the children from Howard Park who took part in the crocus planting – we hope they understand the significance of this.”
