Cash windfall for sports club

HECKMONDWIKE Sports Club received a real boost this week when it received funding for new showers and trophies.

The windfall came from the John Charles Appeal, set up five years ago in memory of the legendary gentle giant of football, John Charles, who lived in Birkenshaw.

Never sent off or booked in a career with Leeds United, Juventus and Swansea, the Welsh international footballer was revered for his fair play and that is the sentiment that his name will carry forward in Heckmondwike and across the Spen Valley.
