CHALLENGE: Daniel Jones is to cycle from London to Newcastle to raise money for Road Peace, a charity which supports victims of road accidents and their families.

A GROUP of friends will cycle from London to Newcastle in 24 hours in memory of two brothers.

The five cyclists will pedal 300 miles on Sunday to raise cash for road accident charity Road Peace, in memory of Christian and Niggy Townend, from Cumbria, who were killed on a bike ride in December 2010.

One member of the team is former Heckmondwike Grammar School pupil Daniel Jones.

Daniel, who now lives in Brighouse, said: “We have been training since January. We do long rides – the hardest was 200 miles in the Lake District which took 17 hours. When the weather’s bad we train on a turbo trainer at home. Our girlfriends have had to put up with their houses full of bike stuff – I’m always on the turbo trainer and I’ve come home from rides with numb hands and feet and my girlfriend Laura Hirst had to put me in a hot bath. She’s been very supportive.”

Laura’s employer, Cleckheaton-based energy company Universal Green Energy, has given £350 towards their £10,000 target. Visit www.justgiving.com/london2newcastle24.
