Church demolition plans

A CHURCH could be demolished and five homes built on the land if plans are agreed.

Developers have applied to Kirklees Council to demolish Broomfield Methodist Church in Shaw Street, Cleckheaton, and build five three-storey homes with two car parking spaces per house.

The scheme includes two semi-detached houses with four bedrooms and three town houses.

The original church building was constructed in 1867 and formed the hub for Methodists in Moorbottom for generations, until the church was rebuilt in 1986. Over the years it was home to the regular congregation, alongside a playgroup, a good neighbours group and countless Guide and Scout meetings.

The church closed for good in September 2011 and congregation members moved to Cleckheaton Methodist Church, formerly Central Methodist Church.

Public consultation is open until Monday.
