Churches in Wyke over last century
THIS week we are taking a look at the various churches in Wyke from the last century.
The photographs have been loaned to us by Peter Walker who is involved with the Lower Wyke Moravian church.
The first picture is of the original Wyke Methodist Church, which was built by the Wesleyan movement during the middle of the 19th Century.
The church was demolished in 1988 due to dry rot and the Sunday School was converted into a dual purpose building.
The parish church of St Mary the Virgin was built in 1847 after the township of Wyke was formed into a church district by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1844. The church took a prominent position overlooking the town and in 1993 a new church hall was built attached to the original church.
The Wyke Council of Church was formed in 1953 with an open-air celebration on the first Sunday in June, to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The group was later renamed the Wyke Christian Council and is still operating today.
