Classic cars’ charity drive
WINNERS: Classic car prizewinners Bruce Combe, Ian Rowlands, Peter Jirst and David Vickers.
CLASSIC cars gathered in Heckmondwike before setting off on a scenic drive to the Peak District to raise money for charity.
More than 65 cars took part in the 13th annual classic car rally organised by Heckmondwike and District Rotary Club.
The cars set off from Ponderosa and drove to Buxton in the Peak District before heading back to the Heckmondwike farm.
The event was organised by Rotary members Barry Horncastle and Derek Ashton.
Barry said: “We started at Ponderosa with a hearty breakfast.
“Nobody knows where the rally is going until the day itself.
“It was about 80 miles – 40 there and 40 back.
“It is a planned, organised route and when they got there, Buxton Rotary Club had organised parking for them.
“It was an excellent day, the weather was very good and there was a barbecue at Ponderosa when we got back.
“We also had a stall which raised £300 for charity, and DM Keith’s Limited, a Skoda dealer from Wakefield, donated raffle prizes worth £600.”
Prizes were handed out for the best cars, judged by Rotary member Anthony Oade from Fred Oade funeral directors, who Barry said was a classic car enthusiast.
First prize went to Peter and Janet Hirst from Batley, for their 1965 Bentley S3.
Second prize went to Ian Rowlands from Leeds for his 1964 Austin-Healey 3000.
Third prize went to David Vickers from Stanley in Wakefield with his 1967 MGB GT.
And the Colman memorial trophy was won by Bruce Combe for his 1949 Triumph Roadster.
The trophy was presented by event sponsor Colman’s Tyre and Motor Company, Littletown, in memory of Heckmondwike Rotarian Syd Colman, who died last year.
Barry said: “There were some fantastic motor cars. The Bentley that won first prize was superb.
“We raised £4,500 for Rotary charities including Help for Heroes, the Forget-Me-Not Children’s Hospice, Kirkwood Hospice, British Heart Foundation. Breast Cancer Care, the Laura Crane Trust, Shelter and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
“Over the 13 years of the rally we have raised about £50,000 for charity.”
