Cleckheaton supermarket loading-bay fire

An arson attack took place at a Cleckheaton supermarket at the weekend.

Fire crews from Cleckheaton fire station were called to Tesco in Northgate on Saturday at 8.30pm after a fire was started in a wheeled cage full of cardboard in the supermarket’s loading bay.

The fire spread quickly to other cages before around 30 were engulfed in flames.

Crew commander Stephen Leach said: “It could have been a lot worse if the cages had been closer to the building – it could have spread inside.

“A passer-by alerted us, and we were lucky to have got there in time.”

Two hose reels were at the site for about an hour. There were no casualties.
