Crews act quickly to contain barn blaze

A FIRE gutted a barn in Norristhorpe on Wednesday morning.

Crews from Cleckheaton and Batley were called out at around 8.10am after reports of a fire at the barn in Owlet Hurst Lane.

The smoke from the blaze could be seen from miles around and flames were said to have been 'coming through the roof' as firefighters arrived.

The barn was mainly used for storing straw and hay.

Another crew from Dewsbury was called after problems with the water supply at the building, which is near the Norristhorpe Working Men's Club.

It took the crews over 45 minutes to get the flames under control and fire fighters spent most of Wednesday making sure the site was safe.

There was extensive roof damage but firefighters got the blaze under control and prevented it spreading to the nearby farmhouse.

Cleckheaton watch manager Trevor McDonald said: "It was a really good response from our crews and they acted quickly to bring the fire under control."

It is not yet known how the blaze started.
