Dazzling line-up for the big switch-ons

CLECKHEATON'S Christmas lights will be switched on in spectacular style next week.

The festivities will kick off on Saturday November 22, with children's rides in the open market from 11am and Santa will be in his grotto for youngsters to visit from 1pm in Central Arcade.

At 1pm, members from SureStart will be in the covered market with face painting and treasure baskets and donkey rides are available from 2pm in Savoy Square.

The Timesteps School of Dance will perform in the Albion Street precinct at 3pm, before the West End Middle School Choir takes to the stage at 3.30pm.

The parade, which will snake around the town centre, will set off at 3.15pm, with the lights being switched on by BBC presenter Clare Frisby, Reporter Series Champion Child Bethan Price and Pudsey Bear, at 4pm, at the precinct in Albion Street.

* Heckmondwike's lights will be switched on by Britain's Got Talent star Craig Harper, on Wednesday November 26.

The impressionist, known for his send-up of Boyzone on the ITV talent show, will push the plunger at 7pm in Market Place with Champion Child Anesha Hussain.

There will be rides in Green Park from 5pm and entertainment courtesy of Mr Topper from 5.30pm.

Charity stalls will be open in Green Park and on the band stand, Santa will be sat in his grotto ready to dish out his presents.

* Roberttown's event, on Friday November 28, will take the form of a Victorian evening with the shops offering hot dogs, hot potatoes and mulled wine. The festivities begin at 3.30pm when children will be given chocolate lollipops and orange juice and their parents can have sherry and mince pies.

Then it kicks off again at 7.30pm again with sherry and mince pies. Huddersfield Youth Band will play carols and then from 8pm local band Jacob's Creek will be entertaining in the WMC where there will also be bingo, a quiz and raffle.

* Birkenshaw's switch-on, on Sunday November 30, will see performances from the Victoria School of Dance and carol singing led by St Paul's choir before the big switch-on at 4.30pm.

The event will kick off at 2pm, with the lights being switched on by the winner of the Birkenshaw Village Association's poster competition (yet to be announced).

At around 4.20pm, Santa will arrive to present the prizes for both the fancy dress and poster competition.

There will be mince pies and refreshments in the community hall in Bradford Road and a variety of stalls in the adjacent Scout hut will feature tombola, raffles, lucky bags, commemorative mugs and mulled wine.
