Pupils from High Bank School have made their own mark on history by helping create an information board about the area’s past.

The children were asked by Spen Valley Civic Society to design artworkfor the board which will be installed at Sparrow Park at the top of Knowler Hill.

The board tells what life was like for children in 1812, at the time of the Luddite uprisings in Spen Valley. The pupils’ work linked into their history topic and they drew pictures of children working in mills, coal mines and sweeping chimneys.

Teacher Sarah Rees said: “The children have loved being involved with this and are delighted to see their finished work on the board. When it is installed we will be taking a walk down to the park to see it.”

Civic Society secretary Erica Amende gave the children a laminated copy of the board and said: “Their work is excellent and shows how much their imaginations have been captured by what life was like for children then.”
