Desmond digs out snap of class of '48
OUR features on Littletown have not only prompted interest in the Spen Valley - they have also proved to be popular with people who have moved away, but still retain a great affection for their home village.
This week we were sent a class photograph of Littletown County Primary School in 1948 by Desmond Jowett who now lives in sunny Bridlington.
He caught up with the Littletown features when a visitor from Spen fetched him some copies.
"In the June 5 issue I was most surprised to see myself in a photo of the Littletown Merry Minstrels troupe," he said.
"This spurred me on to look through my old photos and I came up with this group picture of Littletown School's 1948 class.
"I was born in Bradford Road, opposite Royds Park, and only a stone's throw away from Littletown County Primary School, where I attended from the age of five to leaving at the age of 15.
"I started school in the infants where a Miss Parkin was the teacher. I stayed there for two years before moving up into the 'big school' where a Miss Kathleen Rayner was the teacher.
"I then moved to class two and was taught by Harry Fowler."
Subsequent teachers as Desmond moved up the school were Elsie Shorrick and Mrs Bloxham, while in the top class Mr Baxendale was the teacher. He had replaced Mr J V McDonagh as the headmaster.
"I spent all my school years at one school - 100 yards from my home!" said Desmond.
"Also my mother worked at the school as a dinnerlady all through the war."
