Digging deep for new business
A NATIONAL archaeology firm is hoping to unearth new jobs in the north by digging up the past.
Scottish company CFA Archaeology, which is opening new offices in Cleckheaton, is breathing new life into the industry, which was one of the worst to be hit by the recession.
CFA operates mainly in the commercial sector and works closely with construction firms on larger projects like roads improvement, regeneration and housing schemes.
As contractors, CFA excavates sites to remove historically significant artifacts before building work can begin. But because many commercial projects have been shelved, archaeology has dried up.
However, CFA bosses hope that as the economy starts to show signs of recovery, larger contracts will start rolling in.
Yorkshire regional manager Martin Lightfoot is recruiting staff for the firm's new base at the Moorlands Business Centre, Cleckheaton.
He said: "Yorkshire is a very historical and important centre for archaeology in the UK.
"Cleckheaton is well connected with good motorway links to the rest of the north, as well as the University of Bradford. It gives us a focal point in the region.
Industrial towns like Cleckheaton, Dewsbury and Batley are a big draw for research archaeologists charting the development of the textile industry in the 18th and 19th Century.
Typical finds in the area include iron age artifacts.
