POLICE are stepping up patrols in Cleckheaton to clamp down on anti-social behaviour.

Spen Valley NPT has received complaints of drinking, nuisance vehicle use and drug dealing in the Memorial Park, bus station and around Sykes Fold Grange.

Insp Tim Holland, said: “Reports from the public and councillors now mean this area is being treated as a priority by my team.

“We have increased patrols to dissuade this behaviour and catch those responsible.”

Eddie Morton, chairman of the Spenborough Royal British Legion, said: “This has been a problem for a while, and the Royal British Legion would welcome an increase in patrols to help alleviate the problem.

“I see graffiti, litter and evidence of solvent abuse when I visit the war memorial, and to be honest, I don’t understand how some young people don’t realise they are being so disrespectful.”

The police also believe cannabis, and possibly cocaine, is being dealt outside the bus station.

Metro, which runs the bus station, said it would continue to work in partnership with the police. Customer services directory Diane Groom said: “More than 2,500 passengers use the bus station on a daily basis and Metro is determined they should not have to tolerate the few individuals who disrupt people’s daily journeys.”

Also this week police in Wyke raided a house in Griffe Head Road and recovered 55 cannabis plants.
