TWO young riders from Oakenshaw are this week competing at one of the most famous horse shows in the world.

Isabella Worthington, nine, of Cliff Hollins Lane, and her Welsh pony Milford Mayfair were yesterday competing at the Horse of the Year Show at the NEC in Birmingham.

And neighbour Lauren Beaumont competed in the ridden mountain and moorland pony final on Wednesday, riding her Fell Darrenvale Tybalt.

Isabella, who has been riding since she was six, was due in the ring yesterday afternoon in the final of the Brineton Kare-Plus First Ridden Pony of the Year contest.

She beat 17 others to qualify for the final. She has already chalked up wins at Otley, Ryedale, Emley and Halifax shows this season.

Her mother, Nicola Worthington-French, said Isabella had showed talent from an early age, and was excelling in her hobby.

She said: “We don’t take the riding too seriously, it is just for fun really, but she’s shown that she’s so competent at it, even when there are other children who come from families who work with horses for a living.

“We are very proud of her though, I used to ride as well, and I can tell how good she is.”

Also competing at HOYS is Isabella’s next door neighbour, Lauren Beaumont, who won a class of 45 to qualify for the final of the NPS/Baileys Horse Feeds Ridden M&M Pony of the Year.

The 22-year-old said she hoped going to HOYS would be the start of something big for her – although the duo were awarded best of breed at Olympia last year.

She said she saw a lot of potential in Isabella.

“She’s a great little rider – I’ve seen her compete in some of the events that we’ve both been at, and she always impresses me,” she said.

“I watched the horse events at this year’s Olympics, and I really enjoyed them – I would love to have been there riding. Maybe one day!”
