A housing development for older people with special care needs is a step closer to completion.

The roof has been built and internal work has started on Meadow Green extra care housing scheme, which is being built on the former site of Fairfield School in Dale Lane, Heckmondwike.

Kirklees Council says the scheme will provide high quality rented council flats with communal facilities for older people needing care and support to live independently.

There is also a 24-hour care team on site, every day of the year.

Meadow Green also includes Meadow Green Lodge, a self-contained housing scheme with 10 flats for people with dementia.

It is one of three such schemes currently under construction in Kirklees.

Coun Jean Calvert, Kirklees Council joint Cabinet member for adult social care, said: “ The new flats are an innovative way of giving people the home they want.

“They also offer reassurance and peace of mind to people who all want to know that those they love and care about are safe and secure. We know most prefer to live at home for as long as possible and extra care housing schemes offer people the chance to do this in a safer way.”

Richard Palmer, Kirklees Older People’s Network chairman, said: “Older people can continue to live in the community with reassurance their needs and safety are a priority, without limiting independence.”
