Fishing for compliments

IT'S been another great year in the marine fish business for Interfish duo Ken Blackburn and Roy Meeke.

Their shop has just been named as one of the UK’s top five marine retailers by readers of the Practical Fishkeeping magazine, just three years since they opened at Dewsbury Road, Ossett.

Previously, Ken – who lives in Heckmondwike – and Roy were known as the comedy pairing Jokers Wild. They performed all over the world but never forgot their roots and even at the height of fame continued to perform in this area.

Interfish started from a life-long hobby both Ken and Roy shared. Their shop now attracts customers from as far away as London and Scotland.

Within 12 months of opening, Interfish gained a reputation among fish enthusiasts around the country for its marine and tropical fish stocks and the coral imported and grown at the shop.

The fish are imported from countries such as China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, Jamaica and Brazil, and seahorses are bred at the shop.

A section for cold water fish has been created and there’s even tropical frogs swimming around some of the tanks.

Ken said: “It’s brilliant to be recognised for the work we’ve put in. To say there was absolutely nothing here when we moved to this shop, it’s just great.

“What makes this award even more special is the fact that it was the readers of the magazine which voted – our customers. We have a brilliant relationship with our customers and everything we earn goes straight back into the business to make it even better.”

Ken and Roy have also gone global, taking Interfish on to the web.

Ken added: “I’m sure it won’t be too long before we have customers from overseas visiting our shop. ”
