SHOPPERS in Cleckheaton may find they have a little extra in their pockets this week.

Spenborough Chamber of Trade’s Totally Locally initiative was launched on Saturday with a Fiver Fest during the weekend’s folk festival.

Stalls from local businesses were set up along Albion Street, each with an array of goods on special offer for £5.

Organisers believe the boost to Cleckheaton’s economy would work out at an extra £3.5m a year if everybody in Cleckheaton spent an extra £5 a week in local shops.

Coun Kath Pinnock backed the campaign and suggested that it could be a huge boost for the town.

She said: “I think Totally Locally is a wonderful idea for all the independent shops we have in Cleckheaton. I spoke to the market stall holders and they were thrilled with the interest people had shown.

“It will boost the local economy, and that isn’t just wishful thinking, it is based on how successful the campaign was in Brighouse. If it can work there, it can certainly work here.”

Cleckheaton businessman Stefan Simmonds said: “It was one of the most amazing days I have ever known in Cleckheaton. All the traders had a good day and this was a major investment in the attraction of the town.”

The founder of Totally Locally, Chris Sands, said: “The project highlights how a small change in spending habits can make a huge change to Cleckheaton.

“We have a choice to make the place we live that little bit better by just diverting £5 of our weekly spend back into our local economy.”

There are plans for another Fiver Fest on Saturday August 11 .
