AMATEUR photographer Mike Travers has snapped up a place in a prestigious exhibition on the other side of the world.

Mike, of Denby Close, Hightown, has had a close up of a gerbera flower accepted for the exhibition which is taking place at the 1650 gallery in Los Angeles.

Thousands of images were submitted by photographers with just 50 making the final show.

“The subject was Flower Power so I took a shot of this brightly coloured gerbera with yellow petals and an orange centre, which I had bought in Cleckheaton, and submitted it online,” said Mike. “I was absolutely delighted when I was told it had been accepted, because it’s the first time I’ve tried for a gallery outside this country.”

The exhibition, at the gallery in the famous Echo Park, opened in December, but Mike was not able to go along to the ceremony.

“It was amazing to get through and I’d have loved to have gone over, but it just wasn’t possible at such short notice,” he added.

Mike has been a keen photographer for many years, and has had work published in magazines, books and calendars both in the UK and abroad.

“I took this shot with a Pentax 67 MkII with a 100 macro lens. It was taken on film and then scanned on to digital,” he explained.

“There are pros and cons of using both digital and film - though I prefer film.

“With digital you have to have computer skills so you can work with the image on screen, whereas with film there’s not a lot you can do once the picture has been taken, but there are other skills because you have to be so accurate as regards to exposures with transparencies.”
