Kirklees Council has been slammed for refusing to fix Cleckheaton’s town hall clock – despite spending £5,000 on gold leaf to decorate Dewsbury’s.

Coun Kath Pinnock (Lib Dem, Cleckheaton) said Kirklees had spent £18,000 in total refurbishing Dewsbury town hall clock, including £5,000 on decorative gold leaf.

She said the council had been asked to pay £3,900 for repairs to Cleckheaton town hall clock, which has been out of order for months. But she said the council refused – saying Spen Valley Area Committee should pay instead.

She said: “If Kirklees has that much money to spend on gold leaf for Dewsbury, it must be able to find £3,900 for Cleckheaton’s clock.

“That would pay for new parts and put it together again, and it will last for another 100 years.

“Kirklees has consistently refused to fund it. We put the request through area committee, which is outrageous. Why should we be spending money that is to be spent on things for the town on repairing the town hall clock?

“This is the only route we have got.” The area committee was expected to agree to pay for the repairs at its meeting last night.

Coun David Sheard, Cabinet member for resources, said Dewsbury’s clock repairs were part of its recent refurbishment and Cleckheaton had work done a few years ago. He said: “I agree in sentiment, but if we wait for money to be available from the main repair budget we might have to wait a few years before it becomes more important to mend clocks rather than repair roofs.”
