A MAN from Gomersal is to honour one of his wife’s last wishes by taking part in a sponsored walk for the hospice which cared for her in her final days.

Bill Vaines, of Spen Lane, and friends and family will walk for Carol’s Cause in Wakefield’s Hospice’s Walk to Remember on September 30.

Bill said he was still struggling following his wife Carol’s death in March 2011, but the walk was a way to honour her memory.

“Carol was only 62 when she was diagnosed with transitional cell cancer in January 2011 and we were told it was terminal,” said Bill. “She was in and out of hospital and at the end of February 2011 she was transferred from Pinderfields to the hospice.

“I’d never been to a hospice before, and we were totally unprepared for the love, devotion and help they gave us. We were overwhelmed with everything they did to care for Carol and the whole family.

“When we knew the end was close we had to find some way of saying thank you and came up with Carol’s Cause, and agreed I’d do a sponsored walk for the hospice.”

After Carol died, Bill was offered bereavement counselling by the hospice, which he says has helped him enormously – and he still attends whenever he feels the need.

“They are always there for me – they don’t push you, they don’t belittle you, they just understand. And if they are doing this for me, they are also doing it for other bereaved families as well,” he said.

“The last 18 months have been the hardest of my life and I still miss Carol so much. She was beautiful and full of life. It was very hard to watch this fit woman who would walk eight-10 miles on a weekly basis deteriorate so quickly. The walk will be difficult but my long-time walking friend Alan Keyworth and my daughters Emma and Katie will be at my side, as well as Carol’s nephews Andrew Sibson and Greg Storey, who insisted they wanted to be part of the effort.”

The team hopes to raised £1,000. To sponsor them visit mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/carolscause.
