Former Spen head teacher dies

A former Spen head teacher, Robert Etherington,has died at the age of 82.

Mr Etherington was head at Liversedge Secondary School - now Spen Valley Sports College - from 1977 to 1989, when he retired.

Originally from Liverpool, he moved to the Spen Valley in 1964 to teach in Holmfirth and Barnsley before taking up the Liversedge job.

He and his family lived in Honley, near Huddersfield where Mr Etherington was an active member of the parish church and wider community

Mr Etherington leaves a widow, Marian, four children, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His son, Stef, said: “He was a lovely man, well-respected, and he will be much missed.”

There will be a service of celebration at St Mary’s church in Honley at 2pm on February 15, preceded by private family burial.
