RINGING THE CHANGES: Joan Pinder with the Whitechapel bells.

BELLS rang out across Great Britain this morning to herald the start of the Olympics.

Bell-ringers across the country were asked to ring them for three minutes, starting at 08.12am – exactly 12 hours before the official start of the games.

Among those in Spen who took up the challenge were Whitechapel and Roberttown Parish churches.

Joan Pinder, from Whitechapel church said: “We are very pleased to play our part here at Whitechapel on this special Olymipic day.”

The Whitechapel bells were restored in 2006 and re-hung the following year.
