‘Get young people on board early’

Pupils at a Batley school have rolled up their sleeves for charity and become official Rotarians.

And they kicked off with two challenges involving community work as Batley Grammar’s interact junior Rotary Club took a bow.

School governor and Rotarian Ian Blamires was at the school to see pupils start by being asked to fill 200 shoeboxes for orphanages in Eastern Europe and to raise money for a school in Ghana.

The fundraising got under way with biscuit and cake days at the school just before half-term.

Home-made goodies were taken into school to be sold during breaks.

For the orphanages, the Rotary Club of Birstall Luddites is supplying the shoeboxes for pupils to fill with household items for the needy children.

Mr Blamires said: “This is a great example of young people working for the benefit of society. The Rotary motto is ‘Service before self’ and this is a good way to get the youngsters on board early.”
