GHOSTS and ghouls will be making a spooktacular appearance as Spen prepares itself for halloween.

The festivities begin tomorrow, when a haunted house will mysteriously appear in Cleckheaton’s Savoy Square full of scary surprises. It will be open from 10am-4pm and free to enter.

Free spooky face painting will take place in the market, and a witch-hunt organised by the Totally Locally town centre initiative will take place from 10am.

Those taking part in the hunt can collect a form and a trick or treat bag from the Crown Cafe on Westgate, with all forms to be returned to the cafe by 2.30pm. The cafe will then hold fancy dress competitions for under 7s and under 12s at 3pm.

Matthew Crowther, owner of Matthew’s Coffee House on Market Street, has been involved with organising the event, and hopes that halloween fans of all ages will enjoy the day.

He said: “We are hoping for some ghoulish fun this weekend during the halloween witch-hunt!

“We want everyone to dress in their spookiest outfits, spot the names of the witches in shop windows and collect goodies from spooky shopkeepers along the way. It should be a lot of fun for everyone!”

Heckmondwike will also be getting in on the act, as the town hosts a spooktacular event of its own on Tuesday, including a visit from a very special wizard.

The From Hogwarts to Heckmondwike, event will take place in Heckmondwike Market. Children can meet Harry Potter and Hagrid who will travel all the way from Hogwarts for the day.

They will be performing magic shows to enchant and entertain, at 11am, 12.30pm and 2pm. Free face-painting, balloon-modelling and chocolates are available between 10am and 3pm.
