Groups that were a hive of community activity
THIS week our attention turns to the churches of Low Moor with a snapshot of early 20th century life there.
The first picture is from members of the Wesley Place choir, who won a trophy in the Low Moor Gala, in 1932, comprised Wesley Place chapel congregation. The chapel was demolished over 40 years ago but the choir was led by Willy Downes, whose successor Evelyn Lightowler is also featured.
Much like Wesley Place Chapel, the Raw Nook church has also long since disappeared but was a popular hub of activities including the Sunday School and hosted pantomines during the 1930s and 40s.
The final picture is of the Oxley Place helpers from the Darby and Joan group, from around 1963. Oxley Place was originally a branch of Wesley Place Methodist church but when the premises on School Street suffered a roof collapse in 1946, the members moved to the new location.
