Harry heads to Harvard!

A BRIGHT student from Spen looks set to be one of the few English students to study at a top US university.

Harry Edwards, from Cleckheaton has been accepted for a place at Harvard, widely regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious universities.

Harry, 18, is an A-level student studying maths, further maths, economics, physics and general studies at Greenhead Sixth Form College in Huddersfield. He learnt of the opportunities while studying on a summer school placement in America last year, and is also in line for the Morehead Cain scholarship to study at the University of North Carolina.

He said: “I was absolutely ecstatic to be accepted by Harvard and be a finalist for the Morehead Cain. It felt like the culmination of years of hard work and I just can’t wait to go to the US next year. The summer school was a life-changing experience for everyone involved.

“I thought the US was the right place because, firstly, I love the friendly, enthusiastic culture.

“I also prefer the liberal arts style of education out there, and US is home to many of the best universities on the planet, many of which offer extremely generous financial aid.”

The Sutton Trust, which helps fund places at top US universities for English state school students, will be giving Harry a share of the $2m it will be giving out in grants to 12 students from accross the UK to help fund their studies in the States.

Sir Peter Lampl, chairman of the Sutton Trust said: “I congratulate each of these students on their tremendous achievements. I am sure they will have life-changing experiences from attending American universities, and act as a beacon for thousands of other state school students.”
