AN historic estate which includes the final resting place of legendary outlaw Robin Hood has gone up for sale.

Kirklees Estate, on the Hartshead border, has been listed for sale for between £7m and £7.7m with London estate agents Strutt and Parker.

Within the 750 acre estate is a 100 acre site allocated for business development under Kirklees Council’s Local Development Framework.

Included in the sale is the principal house with an annexe; two traditional farmhouses with buildings; a farm manager’s house and a cottage as well as a number of other buildings, vast woodland and gardens.

The estate is home to the reputed grave of Robin Hood, an heroic outlaw who was said to steal from the rich, giving his ill-gotten gains to the poor.

The estate started life as a Roman encampment.

Kirklees Priory was constructed in 1135 by lord of the manor Reyner Le Flemyng.

The Priory remained occupied until the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century.

The estate was bought by the Armytage family in 1565 and the family has lived there ever since.

The remains of the priory buildings are still standing.

Estate agent Claire Whitfield said there had been a lot of interest in the sale.

She said: “We are very pleased indeed with the interest. People are excited by it – they are saying things like this don’t come up very often.

“It’s a private oasis in what is an otherwise busy area. It’s set within beautiful countryside but with access to the motorway.”
