A high-street travel agent is celebrating its 25-year anniversary this month.

Thomsons Holidays opened in March 1988 in Cleckheaton, and is now one of the longest-serving shops in the town centre.

Manager Donna Connett said holidaymakers today seemed to prefer being pampered when they went away, compared to their expectations 25 years ago when the store opened in Cheapside.

She said: “It’s interesting how people have changed their holidaying habits.

“Twenty five years ago, people booked mainly seven-night self-catering packages to mainland Spain, and we had just started with Greece.

“The all-inclusive packages were unheard of really, whereas now, quite a lot of people who come to the shop will ask for all-inclusive. This is probably due to people’s budgets these days – if you pay for everything up-front, you don’t really have to worry about spending money further down the line.

“One thing that has become quite popular over the past few years are cruises to the Mediterranean and the Carribean.”

The shop will be celebrating its milestone anniversary on Saturday March 9 with buns, bubbly and special codes for customers.
