A COUPLE from Wyke are celebrating after one of their young ponies took first prize at a prestigious agricultural show.

Shaun and Alison Rogerson, from Wyke, were overjoyed when their Fell pony Murthwaite Frosty Morn won his class at Halifax Show.

The yearling, whose stable name is Jack, topped a class of nine ponies in the mountain and moorland youngstock section.

A delighted Shaun, a computer programmer, said: “We are so pleased at the victory – we have had Jack for six months, and we have trained him up to be in these shows during that time.”

After being observed walking around the ring together, the animals line up to each be inspected by the judge for their condition, paces and to check that they are standing correctly.

The couple had double cause to celebrate, as another of their ponies, Manny, took third prize in his class.

Shaun said their success was a labour of love: “It is hard work and you don’t win much in terms of prize money, but we do this for the love of it!”

l A charity horse show planned for tomorrow at Hopton Horse Centre has been cancelled. Organisers said torrential rain had flooded the show field.
