A travel agent who reopened independently after former owners planned to close the shop is celebrating a successful first week in business.

Katie Battye, manager of Heckmondwike’s Co-op Travel shop in Northgate, reopened the shop last week after its owners Thomas Cook decided to close it.

She is now trading as Total Travel with the same team of staff, hailing their first week as an independent business as a great success.

And the shop is hosting a party tomorrow to thank old customers and welcome new ones, from noon to 2pm.

She said: “We had a really great week. We can’t believe it.”

After Thomas Cook announced the store would be closing, customers wrote urging the company to keep it open.

Heckmondwike councillor Steve Hall (Lab) started a petition, saying the business was needed and well used in the town.

Despite their efforts, Thomas Cook carried on with its closure plans.

Katie said the support from customers encouraged her to set up independently.

She said she is ABTA registered, which means customers’ money is protected.

She said: “When Thomas Cook made the announcement we were to close, there was a lot of uproar and customers rang in to them to complain.

“It gave me the courage to do this.”
