Joel puts the Olympics in the frame
THE memorable Olympic summer of 2012 is certain to live long in the recollection of Royal Navy photographer Joel Rouse.
Joel, 26, enjoyed the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to point his camera at the Olympic sailing events at Weymouth and was also part of the press pack covering the medal ceremonies at the Paralympics.
He also got to spend time on the other side of the lens, including being photographed with silver medal winning sailor Luke Patience.
Joel, whose father Neil lives in Liversedge, currently serves on the Navy’s flagship HMS Bulwark, which was tasked with providing maritime security across 50 square miles of the English Channel off Weymouth and Portland for the duration of the Olympics.
He was invited on to the press boat which was following the sailing competitions and also captured some stunning images of the Navy’s security operations taken from one of the helicopters based on HMS Bulwark.
The father-of-three, who lives with girlfriend Jodie in Plymouth, said: “I love being a photographer because I get to see many diverse and interesting people and events while serving in the Navy.”
Joel joined the Navy almost 10 years ago and, after completing his basic training, joined the submarine service as a marine engineering mechanic and served on the nuclear-powered submarine HMS Trenchant.
He later put his hobby to good use by transferring to the Navy’s photographic branch, and graduated from the Defence School of Photography in April 2011.
He said: “I still miss my family and friends up north, although I don’t get back there as often as I’d like.
