something’s cooking at Birkenshaw First School!

The pupils have been learning about healthy eating and how to prepare and cook food during an after-school club.

Nursery nurse Tracy Poutney, who runs the Let’s Get Cooking Club, said: “It’s a government-run scheme funded by the lottery to try and get children cooking and eating healthy food.

“They come for a block of five weekly lessons and learn about skills such as chopping and mixing.

“They really enjoy it and have made a real variety of things such as pizzas with healthy toppings, Thai green curry, chilli and fruit kebabs.

“We try to make starters, main courses, snacks and puddings and we also use Fairtrade ingredients so the children are also looking at the bigger picture of where their food comes from.”
