Luddites are set to dramatically storm a Liversedge pub next weekend.
Spen Valley Civic Society is hosting a special event to mark the 202nd anniversary of the storming of William Cartwright’s Rawfolds Mill in Cleckheaton.
The family event is being held at the Shears Pub in Halifax Road on Saturday, April 12 from 6pm.
It follows on from the opening of Sparrow Park, at the junction of Knowler Hill and Halifax Road, and the installation of the Luddites statue which was unveiled to mark 200 years since the Luddites attacked the mill.
Several hundred of them met on April 11 1812 and made their way to Rawfolds where they met with Cartwright’s men in a night of violence.
Many of the area’s Luddites, mainly croppers, regularly met in an upstairs room at the Shears, which is why the pub has been chosen for the anniversary event.
Food will be available on the night and a group of re-enactors from Huddersfield will help celebrate the history of the event.
