Man jailed over Jess the dog theft

A MAN has been jailed for six months for stealing a dog from outside Tesco in Cleckheaton last year.

Gary Marshman, 27, of Fernside Street, in Bradford, was jailed for the theft of a 12-year-old cross border collie called Jess.

He was found guilty of the theft of the dog from outside Tesco, in Northgate, Cleckheaton, during a trial at Dewsbury Magistrates Court last month.

Jess was found dead in shallow water of Spen Beck two days later, after apparently being thrown off the Mann Dam bridge.

Marshman was caught on CCTV taking the dog on January 15 2009.

Magistrate chairman Vince Reynolds said: ""The offence is so serious that only a custodial sentence is justified.

"This offence has been taken against vulnerable victims."

He was also sentenced to 14 days in prison for previously failing to surrender to custody, to be served concurrently.
