Two butchers’ shops in Cleckheaton have cooked up a storm after walking away with a staggering 19 awards between them.
The British Pig Executive Awards roadshow dished out a mouth-watering 11 awards to Metcalfe’s Butchers in Northgate, while B&M Collins in Westgate picked up a succulent eight awards from the presentation in Harrogate on January 29.
The awards were entered by 62 butchers’ shops from across Yorkshire and the Northeast. Among the products Metcalfe’s was recognised for were its bacon, duck and scotch eggs.
Owner John Metcalfe said: “It was really nice to win these awards. With so many other butchers competing, it’s good to get the recognition.
“We have been here for more than 50 years, but have only just started entering awards like this – so it’s nice to do well.”
Collins’ butchers walked away with eight gold awards – a feat only bettered by Golcar-based Bolster Moor Farm Shop – for products such as its pork pies and black pudding.
Owner Margory Collins said: “We were so chuffed when we won the awards, and it was in Harrogate, so it was also a nice day out for us too! It is satisfying to know that you have been recognised for what you do like this.”
Collins won first place in last year’s Great Yorkshire Pork Pie competition, and Margory hopes this year’s win will have a similar effect.
“There has been interest since we won the awards last year,” she said. “So hopefully this will do us some good too.”
