Members of a Gomersal ladies’ gym have been left mystified after it closed without warning.
Hilltop Leisure and Fitness, in Oxford Road, Gomersal, closed on Saturday.
A notice in the window and on its website states: “In view of challenging trading conditions, we regret to inform you that Hilltop Leisure and Fitness ceased to trade as from the close of business on Saturday February 1.
“Under the circumstances will you immediately cancel any standing order payment from your bank in respect of any membership fees that are due to be paid.”
The notice, from owners Darren and June Jewsbury, thanked members for their custom and apologised for any inconvenience and says more information will be issued on the website ‘in due course’.
But one member says members had no warning – and was angry nobody had been told.
She said: “We’ve all paid our membership. What will happen to that? We’ll have to all go and cancel our direct debits.
“People have been turning up for classes only to find out if they have closed.
“We all enjoyed going there, it was a really nice, friendly place to go, it’s such a shame, and it’s also a shame for all the staff there.”
Kathryn Cook, owner of PJ’s Health and Fitness Village in Cleckheaton, said she believed the gym had gone into administration.
She said: “It is really sad. A lot of the members have been going for a long time and it’s part of their life.
“We feel it very much for the staff too, because they have lost their jobs.”
Ms Cook, who is a founder member of the Great Spen Valley Health Challenge, set up to try and get inactive people active, said the gym facilities were much needed in Spen.
She said: “There is so much in the headlines at the moment about obesity levels. Every day you read something about it.
“The gym has been running about 16 years and we have lived alongside each other because there are enough people in this area who want the facilities – it’s the economic climate that’s had the effect.
“It’s really important people go somewhere they feel comfortable and we think we have a similar atmosphere to Hilltop, so we have offered everyone who has contacted us about the closure a free week to see if they feel comfortable with what we offer.
