Metal firm rises from the wreckage to win award
A METALWORKING firm which was set up by employees who were made redundant has been named Business of the Year.
Liversedge-based AS Fabrications defied all the odds to be given the accolade at a ceremony hosted by law firm Eaton Smith and its award partners Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce and Business Link.
Just over 12 months ago, 37 jobs were axed at Glentworth Architectural Metalwork an extension of southern company Glentworth Fabrication, which folded after running into financial difficulties.
Even though the Liversedge company was trading profitably and had completed work on major projects including Sandown Park Racecourse, and Twickenham's new southstand, the firm had to close.
But workers refused to give in and with backing from Yorkshire Forward, HSBC and Euro Fence Coatings, a new company was formed and 50 per cent of the workforce were given their jobs back.
Managing director Mick Fortune said: "As managers of the previous company, we picked up the pieces and established the new business under a new structure.
"We found financial support and we have based the business on a few fundamental values which should apply to every business – strict financial control, monthly management accounting, looking after our team and providing high quality customer service."
AS Fabrications UK manufactures steel and glass balustrades and staircases for companies all over Britain.
