Moving tribute to popular cricketer

ONE of local cricket’s best-loved characters has been honoured in a memorial cricket match.
Gary Hallas had a 20/20 match played in his honour between former clubs Cleckheaton St John’s Cricket Club and Crossbank Methodists in Birstall.
Gary joined Crossbank Methodists after Cleckheaton St John’s folded back in 2000, and former players from both sides came out to celebrate the life of one of both teams’ best-loved former players in a fitting tribute, playing the game Gary loved.
Gary grew up in Liversedge, before moving to Mirfield.
A keen sportsman, Gary played cricket at local level, as well as rugby for Dudley Hill in Bradford, and was also a member of Spenborough Athletics Club.
In his youth, he was a top sprinter, and held the record time for the 200 metres at Heckmondwike Grammar School for more than 15 years.
Gary died aged 42 last November, following a battle with a serious heart condition.
His children were among scores of family and friends in attendance at the match, which was won by the former players of St John’s Cricket Club.
