Mum swims equivalent of channel for charity

NORRISTHORPE mum Carolyn Chamberlain has swum the English channel – without ever leaving British shores.

The 41-year-old from Spring Bank Drive set herself the challenge of swimming 22 miles, the distance of the legendary Channel swim, with regular trips to Spen Pool and Dewsbury Sports Centre.

She began the challenge in September, completing between 40-50 lengths on each visit – and raising 90 for the spinal charity Aspire at the same time.

Carolyn, who is married to Neil and has three children, said: "A couple of years ago I lost about three stones in weight by doing more exercise and walking more.

"I thought as I was doing this exercise I could set myself a personal challenge and raise money for charity at the same time.

"I went about twice a week and completed 1,073 lengths in total.

"I really enjoyed doing it and am now looking for another challenge.

"I've struggled with my weight over the years and now I've found a way to keep it off and feel so much fitter. The last swim felt really good, I knew I'd achieved something – but I remember coming to the last length and thinking I'd better do an extra one just in case!"
