New community centre for Heckmondwike
A NEW church building which is aiming to become a centre for the Heckmondwike community is now taking shape.
The town’s Salvation Army has demolished a hut where its community activities took place, and is building a new centre, to be called the Hub, where its groups will now meet.
The former hut was the home of the church’s pre-school playgroup, luncheon club, children’s clubs and other activities, and was demolished at the start of the summer to make way for the new two storey building.
Church leader, Major Sharen Furlong, said; “Our vision and desire for this new building is that it will become the heart and hub of our local community, where creative activity can take place, people can come together in a safe, inclusive and supportive environment and where we can radiate God’s love as we seek to serve our local community.”
Major Furlong said the new facility would mean the church’s community programme could grow, and would include a five day a week pre-school playgroup, extended luncheon club provision, senior citizens’ group, kids’ clubs, parent and toddlers club, schools’ work, and a facility for community hire.
The new building would have a bigger kitchen to cater for more people in the luncheon club and a purpose built play area.
And work to modernise the church along with a new foyer to link the two buildings would also take place.
Work on the Hub is expected to be finished by September with the grand opening in January.
Major Furlong added: “The church members continue to work hard to raise funds for the building project which is about £420,000. Currently, the shortfall is in the region of £50,000 and any financial support and donations from the general public or indeed local businesses who would like to sponsor this much needed community facility would be very welcome.”
