New lights must stay

I READ with interest the comments regarding the traffic lights at the Pack Horse crossroads and would like to make some further observations.

The installation of the lights was mooted as soon as the anticipated difficulties with the closure of the bridge over the motorway at Whitechapel arose.

The queuing of traffic up Moorside has always existed because of the necessity to stop at the junction at the top, albeit without control.

There is now some control with the lights and the traffic flow is regulated and hopefully will cut down on the number of dangerous incidents and accidents at the said crossroads. (Incidentally, if the lights are in your favour when coming up Moorside, then there is no need to stop at all).

The residents of Halifax Road have for some considerable time been requesting, from our councillors and Kirklees Council's Highways department, measures to reduce the speed of vehicles from Windy Bank Lane, along Halifax Road, over the crossroads and over the motorway bridge and vice versa, without success.

There is now a noticeable reduction in speed and noise and we hope that the lights become a permanent feature.

This would free up a speed camera which could be re-sited elsewhere in Kirklees.

Since the bridge in Whitechapel has closed, this will obviously cause some inconvenience to a lot of drivers and the volume of traffic will increase in Halifax Road and Moorside, but at least it will be regulated by the lights.

Finally, the claim that New lane will become a 'rat run' is nonsense as the road conditions and the parked vehicles there prohibit high speed on the said road.
